TGOC-2013: Mallaig to Girdle Ness

My planned route

My route across Scotland is now planned. Leave from Mallaig on 10th May and arrive in Aberdeen on 22nd or 23rd May. Then train to Montrose for the TGOC dinner and meet-up.

TGOC beginners are recommended to plan a route that isn’t too high, so I’m mostly following the glens, with only 4 Munros on the way (Gairich, Carn an Sagairt Mor, Lochnagar and Mount Keen). Of course, a bad day will probably mean I skip the hill and stay low and conversely very good weather in Knoydart may tempt me up a couple of others.

My route – Inverie to Aberdeen

I start in Mallaig with the Bruce Watt ferry from Mallaig to Knoydart. This has a lot of memories for me as I first went on a Bruce Watt boat (called the Clansman) in the 1950s when I was just a wee boy. I had a shot of driving the boat which was great fun (I have no idea who the woman is – my mother is looking dubious outside the wheelhouse). Remarkably, there doesn’t seem to be anyone who knows what they are doing involved – I guess Health and Safety wouldn’t allow this now.

Pub in Inverie for a pint and venison burger then Sourlies, Glen Dessary to Kinbreak bothy, Gairich (1st hill) then along Loch Garry to South Laggan. From there it is through the forest and drop down to Glen Roy, following this to Garva Bridge then the other Laggan. Wade road to Kingussie, through Glen Feshie to Braemar for a ‘rest day’ (TGOC Saturday in Braemar is (in)famously hard on livers). Then over Lochnagar via Loch Callater to Glen Muick. A bit of a trudge to Mount Keen then camp in Glen Tanar. Final stretch is from Aboyne along the Deeside Way to Aberdeen.

Mostly camping but with a couple of B & B’s in Kingussie and Braemar. A couple of river crossings in Glen Kingie and in Glen Roy that could be challenging so fingers crossed the weather these days will be dry. Will need to carry 4 days food through Knoydart but after that I should be able to resupply every couple of days.
